Home Improvements and Insurance Costs

Many people buy homeowners insurance and make claims to make improvements to their house.  When homeowners do this, they may not be aware of the fact that they will be raising their premiums when making the claim.

If a tree has fallen on your lawn, you may just want to remove it yourself or pay someone to remove it.  When disasters are larger, for example, if the tree smashes into your house, then making a claim would be a better idea.  It is very unlikely that you would be able to fix the repairs yourself.  You could also decrease the value of your home if you do not do a good job.

Sometimes you will increase the value of your home when making improvements that were necessary and covered by insurance. If you have hail damage to your roof or sides of the home, they will need to be replaced to avoid leakage and other problems.  Homeowners insurance will cover these problems due to natural disasters and improve the value of your home.

If you want to add insulation to your home, you are making improvements and will increase the amount of insurance that will cover your home, but insurance will not pay for it unless it is damaged by a natural disaster or by a criminal.

There are other improvements like  adding a security system to your home and adding fire extinguishers and alarms will decrease the amount you pay for homeowners insurance every month.
